Celery Seed
Apium graveolens

Celery seed essential oil is steam-distilled from the dried ripe fruits of Apium graveolens, a biennial herb of the Apiaceae family cultivated across Europe, Asia, and India, where seeds have featured in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries as a digestive tonic and diuretic. The oil chemistry is dominated by phthalides — particularly sedanolide and 3-n-butylphthalide — alongside limonene, selinene, and small amounts of apiol, which collectively deliver a warm, earthy, spicy aroma distinct from fresh celery stalks. Ultrasound-assisted hydrodistillation studies have confirmed the seed oil exhibits meaningful antimicrobial activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria including Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and the yeast Candida albicans, suggesting utility as a natural preservative.[1] In aromatherapy it is valued for supporting digestive comfort, easing nervous tension, and promoting a sense of calm clarity.
