Cypress

Cypress essential oil from Cupressus sempervirens branches and leaves is dominated by alpha-pinene (~48%) and delta-3-carene (~22%), with lesser amounts of terpinen-4-ol, limonene, and cedrol. The oil demonstrates potent antibacterial activity including complete inhibition of both antibiotic-susceptible and antibiotic-resistant Helicobacter pylori at 0.1% v/v, alongside significant antifungal and antioxidant properties.[1] Antioxidant activity against DPPH and ABTS radicals, antibacterial effects, and insecticidal activity have been confirmed in a further systematic study.[2]

- $$$$Harvested only from wild and plantation-grown trees in Australia's Northern Territory; the dense heartwood requires prolonged distillation, and the rich cobalt-blue guaiazulene content makes it substantially costlier than common cypress oils.
Blue Cypress essential oil, steam-distilled from the wood and bark of Callitris intratropica, is composed largely of the sesquiterpene alcohols guaiol (~13-18%) and bulnesol (~8-12%) alongside alpha-, beta-, and gamma-eudesmol isomers, precursors that undergo dehydrogenation during distillation to form the azulene compounds (chamazulene and guaiazulene) responsible for its striking cobalt-blue color. In vitro and in vivo testing found the oil to have moderate antioxidant activity and anti-inflammatory effects, supporting its long-standing use by Aboriginal communities of Arnhem Land for skin and wound care.[3] A 2023 laboratory and field trial found a topical blue cypress formulation provided initial mosquito-repellent protection, though its effect declined markedly faster than DEET within the first hour of application.[4] The oil's warm, woody-balsamic profile and geographic rarity make it a prized base note in modern niche perfumery and skincare formulations, distinct from the fresh evergreen character of Mediterranean Cypress.
