Rosewood
Aniba rosaeodora

Rosewood essential oil is steam-distilled from the heartwood of Aniba rosaeodora (Ducke), an Amazonian tree of the Lauraceae family whose oil is characterised by an exceptionally high linalool content (>85%), a monoterpene alcohol responsible for its gentle, floral-woody aroma and broad pharmacological activity. GC-MS analysis of the Amazonian variety confirms linalool as the overwhelmingly dominant component alongside minor quantities of a-terpineol, geraniol, and 1,8-cineole. Linalool isolated from rosewood oil has demonstrated antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, antifungal activity against Candida species, and selective cytotoxicity toward epidermoid cancer cells through apoptosis induction without affecting healthy cells [1]. In rodent models, intravenous administration of linalool-rich rosewood oil induced dose-dependent bradycardia and hypotension via a vago-vagal reflex, while oral administration significantly extended sleeping time, confirming the sedative and cardiovascular-modulating properties that underpin its aromatherapeutic use in stress and anxiety [2]. The species is listed as vulnerable by CITES due to historical over-harvesting of wild Amazonian trees, making sustainably certified or plantation-sourced oil essential for responsible use.
