Violet Leaf
Viola odorata

Violet leaf absolute (Viola odorata) is characterised by the intensely green, cucumber-like aldehydes 2,6-nonadienal and 2-nonenal, alongside ionones, benzyl alcohol, and other trace volatiles. GC-MS analysis of the essential oil fraction has identified 25 compounds with demonstrated antioxidant and antibacterial activity.[1] The volatile profile differs by provenance — plants from France and Egypt show distinct odorant-active marker ratios — making origin authentication possible via GC-olfactometry.[2]
